Denyse Schmidt

Denyse Schmidt Quilts...a modern take on the classic quilt. A former graphic designer and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Denyse Schmidt has been sewing since she was a young girl. Denyse reinterprets tradition to make modern functional quilts that are fresh and offbeat. They are characterized by simple graphics, rich color, and quality workmanship.

A gifted teacher, Denyse has most recently expanded her popular workshop line-up. Introductory, advanced and special project workshops are now available in addition to her signature Improvisational Patchwork workshop which offers a handís on opportunity to learn Denyseís intuitive design techniques. All workshops are held at at Denyseís historic Bridgeport, CT studio. http://www.dsquilts.com/workshops.asp

Her Couture and custom quilts, in production since 1996, are pieced to order in her studio and hand-quilted by Amish women in Minnesota. Denyse Schmidt Works (2003), a line of machine-quilted pillows and quilts with an industrial-chic aesthetic, are made at her studio. Denyse Schmidt Designs for Sarita Handa, a partnership with Sarita Handa Exports, launched in 2004 with an affordable line of high-quality quilts and accessories. The designs are pure Denyse, and are available through many retailers, including Crate and Barrel, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Maine Cottage Furniture.

In 2003, Chronicle Books launched the What a Bunch of Squares and Dots & Jots gift and stationery collections. Her first how-to book, Denyse Schmidt Quilts, 30 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects was published in July 2005 to rave reviews and popular success. It features patterns and instructions for 20 very cool patchwork projects and 10 of her beloved quilt designs.

In 2006, Denyse introduced her first fabric collection in partnership with FreeSpirit Fabric. Her fabric designs reflect her unique talent for bringing a fresh perspective to vintage style and color.

Denyse Schmidt was born in 1961 and grew up in central Massach usetts, surrounded by the textile mill towns prevalent in that area.
